Abstract

To prove the existence of a musical-rhetorical theory for composition in the 17th and early 18th c., one must consider (1) the relationship between the disciplines of rhetoric and composition theory as initiated by German Protestant schools; (2) music treatises of the period that have given rise to the notion that rhetoric was a component of compositional theory; and (3) the continuing development of rhetoric and musical theory and practice in the Baroque.
