The following authentic depictions are discussed: (1) the picture of the funeral procession (1616); (2) the engraving by August John (1627); (3) the oil paintings by Christoph Spetner (after 1656); (4) the engraving by Christian Romstet (1672); and (5) the engraving Schütz und seine Kantorei in der Schlosskirche Dresden (1676). The Washington portrait of a musician by Rembrandt, believed for a long time to be a portrait of Schütz, has been proved not to be, although the identification of the sitter as Constantijn Huygens also leaves room for doubt. The oil miniature Heinricus Sagittarius MDCLXX (Deutsche Staatsbibliothek, Berlin) which turned up in the jubilee year 1935, has recently been proved a 20th-c. fake.
