The effect of harmonic progressions depends on their organization in time. The interplay of rhythm and chordal movement thus determines the course of the Kleine geistliche Konzerte in several dimensions. It establishes a clear articulatory framework, constitutes complementary sections and integrates the various parts into a whole. Representative structures indicative of an intrinsic musical value have been studied in six pieces from the Kleine geistliche Konzerte. Such structures prove to be a prerequisite for releasing the rhetorical energy and pathos of the texts in performance.
