Abstract

A historical survey of analytical writings on Schütz together with a systematic breakdown by topic, using the results to explain trends in Schütz's changing image. Three historical stages with changing emphases are identified: music and times—fundamental theses, broadly conceived studies and, especially, Schütz as a great German (c. 1925 to c. 1936); music and language—studies of text settings and, especially, of musicotextual exegesis and the doctrine of figures (early 1950s to 1970s); and form and meaning—studies of the internal musical conception of Schütz's work and its role in the history of compositional technique (late 1970s).
