The chorale fantasies 'Allein zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ' and 'Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott', attributed to Heinrich Scheidemann in the Pelplin organ tablatures, have long been questioned by scholars due to the poor state of the surviving texts and there apparent lack of context. A recent edition by Klaus Beckmann ascribes them to Franz Tunder. This essay examines the question of attribution on the basis of their sources and their style of writing. A comparison with the techniques of arrangement employed by Scheidemann in the other genres (lied variations, Magnificat settings, motet colorations) leaves little doubt that the attribution to Scheidemann is justified. In light of these investigations, the chorale fantasy appears even more clearly to have been a major self-contained sub-genre within the organ works of the Hamburg master. (Autor)
