Georg Muffat considered his 'Apparatus musico-organisticus' in the preface of the edition of 1690 with great self-confidence the successor of Girolamo Frescobaldis's printed toccata books. Therefore he distinguishes this work from the numerous contemporary organ works which have come down handwritten and served practical use only. The compositional technique of Muffat's toccatas is noteworthy above all because of their large form, which consists of several parts whose motifs are linked to each other. In his Toccata Prima, which has survived in an early version of about 1685, this form conception is only the result of a revision. Muffat's 'Apparatus musico-organisticus' requires a judgement which starts out primarily from aesthetic aspects rather than from liturgical ones. (Autor)
