Abstract

In madrigals of Gabrieli's disciples, the length of a musical section can be determined by confronting several passages of a poem. Such a section has a clear aim, which results from the original sequence of the text passages: Every part should reach each of the later text passages. Achieving this aim can be delayed by a long rest of a part, by polyphonic arrangement of the setting or with the help of harmony. The meaning of the poem is not only interpreted on account of those text combinations. With the help of the music, word-plays can be carried on or new, surprisingly correct poetic text structures can be crated spontaneously. This technique can also be found in madrigals with basso continuo part of the time around 1620. Apparently this is the manifestation of a compositional tradition of the renaissance and early baroque, which up to now has remained unnoticed. (Autor)
