Sixteenth- and seventeenth-century music theorists rediscovered ancient rhythm and related it to contemporary music. In Gemran, this was primarily done by Wolfgang Caspar Printz. The study examines how the music of Schütz appears in view of ancient rhythm and its contemporary variants, and where and to what extent rhythmic quality can be attributed to it. The result is complex. Several units come to light which correspond to the ancient concept of rhythm in all points. At the same time, it is evident that Schütz arranges most of the units which occur in the rhythm sphere in a well-balanced manner, whitout measuring them out numerically.
