Abstract

Surprising peculiarties in two compositions in Schützs original work collections mark the starting point for this study: a cadence riddled whit compositional mistakes in motet SWV 40, and the incorrect declamation of the beginning phrase of concerto SWV 410. The analysis of these irregularities leads to the following hypotheses concerning the history of these works: 1) The familiar version of the motet Ist nicht Ephraim mein teurerSohn (Psalmen Davids, No. 19, SWV 40) was preceded by a shorter, earlier version whitout capellae. 2) The concerto Siehe, dieser wird gesetzt zu einem Fall (Symphoniae sacrae III, No 13, SWV 410) is based on a non extant original version whit a Latin text which begins 'Ecce positus est hic in ruinam'.
